Gerald Owens

Gerald Owens has dedicated his career to the pursuit of truth and integrity in journalism, shaped by pivotal experiences that underscore the importance of delivering impactful news to communities. His journey began with an internship at ABC News "Nightline" during Operation Desert Shield in 1990, where he witnessed firsthand the power of journalism on a national level, during significant historical events.

His first paid job in the industry was as a reporter trainee at WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C., in 1993. He covered local news on a daily basis in the Washington, DC area. From there he moved south, to WTKR TV, to become a political reporter and weekend anchor.

Three years later, he returned to WUSA as a morning anchor. After three years, a detour into sports reporting followed. It was a natural fit for Gerald, who had played basketball at Guilford College in Greensboro and had been a sports fan his whole life. However, the events of September 11, 2001, served as a sobering reminder of the vital role news played in society and his career. He needed to go back to news. Joining WRAL-TV, Gerald found a platform that aligned with his values of integrity, credibility, and community connection. His steadfast commitment to integrity guides his work ethic. Gerald anchors WRAL's 5:00, 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00 newscasts.

His and his wife Leigh have 2 grown children, and live on a farm in Harnett County, with 1 horse, 2 miniature cows, 3 miniature donkeys, 8 chickens and 4 dogs.
