Over the past year, the branch remained steadfast in advancing its mission to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color. Through civic engagement, education advocacy, and direct community outreach, the branch continued to make a meaningful impact across the communities it serves.

Members participated in community programs such as Jubilee Day, and the annual Triangle Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Breakfast. The branch also engaged in community civic education through participation in candidate forums hosted by the Raleigh Wake Citizens Association and the League of Women Voters and the branch’s Souls to the Polls voter mobilization efforts where the community had the opportunity to hear from 32 candidates vying for their votes.

In addition, members organized and supported voter registration initiatives at community events and within the local jail, helping expand access to the ballot and encouraging informed civic participation.

Education remains a central focus of the branch’s work. Through its adoption of Walnut Creek Elementary School, members provided consistent support to students and educators. Volunteers participated in the Backpack Buddies Program, helping address food insecurity among students, and served as weekly classroom volunteers, assisting with reading and individualized student support. Members also volunteered during the school’s annual “Read Across the Creek” literacy initiative.

To ensure community perspectives remain part of education decision-making, the branch maintains bi-monthly representation at Wake County Public School System Board meetings, with one branch member serving on the board. This continued engagement strengthens communication between the community and local education leadership.

Throughout the year, the branch supported community well-being through a variety of outreach initiatives. Members hosted health education sessions, provided scholarships for graduating high school seniors in partnership with one of our faith partners, and advocated alongside parents and families addressing school-related concerns.

Through service, advocacy, and civic engagement, the branch continues to strengthen community connections, empower residents, and advance equity and opportunity for all. Each initiative reflects the branch’s enduring commitment to ensuring that every voice is heard and every community member has the opportunity to thrive.
